Argues that Crevecoeur realized that a book by a Catholic French immigrant living in the hinterlands of New York would not sell and therefore portrayed himself as a Protestant American of English descent farming in Carlisle, Pennsylvania; analyzes his writings to prove that the locale was, however, Orange County, New York.

Elizabeth Marie Pope was born May 1, 1917 in Washington D.C. She received an A.B. Degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1940 and a Ph.D. from John Hopkins University in 1944. Ms. Pope is a professor of English. She has written her books for particular people. The subjects of her books are in some way connected to history and are celebration of the power of intelligence.
